12-05-06 - Tiger Ridge Restaurant, Ste Genevieve, MO

They will be reviewing the 2006 grape growing season.
Dr. Donn Johnson will discuss the results of his vineyard insect pest
monitoring. They will also discuss results of the canopy management plots. Lunch
will be provided at a cost of $15 per person. Please RSVP to Alisa

or call Alisa at 573-882-6656.
On another note, the first ever Unwanted Pesticide Disposal in Oklahoma will
take place in Altus on December 6 8 am to 2 pm at Humphrey’s COOP Elevator in
Altus at 2109 Asphalt Road .
This is for people in production agriculture (farmers, ranchers, greenhouses,
and nurseries), certified applicators, and pesticide dealers. Please no
homeowners at this time. No questions asked all farmers/ranchers and other
participants will remain anonymous.
This collection will take only pesticides no other hazardous waste will be
accepted such as oil, paint, antifreeze etc. All pesticides will be taken no
matter the size.
There is no cost for the first 2,500 pounds of pesticides brought by a
participant. Anything over 2,500 pounds will be charged to the participant at a
$1/pound for all pesticides except mercury based pesticides, wherein
participants will be charged $2.22/pound for disposal. Clean Harbors will accept
payment in the form of check or credit card at the disposal site. No cash will
be accepted!
Dealers are asked to pre-register due to the potential of large quantities
coming from multiple dealers and/or multiple locations. This allows Clean
Harbors to plan the appropriate resources to handle the quantity of pesticides
that comes into the collections.
Collections for NW OK and Eastern Oklahoma are scheduled for February 2007. I am
working on arranging sites for those and will make that information available as
soon as possible.
For more information please see our website
http://pested.okstate.edu/unwanted.htm the time and locations, maps,
transportation tips, and dealer registration form is there plus a Frequently
Asked Question section. Or you can contact Charles Luper.

Grape growers and winemakers,
It’s time for another issue of the Le Vigneron newsletter;
(PDF). Make sure you check it out. I think they have done an awesome job with
it.
Also, I will make one last reminder to please turn in your survey. I am going to
deliver all the surveys I have to Dr. Stafne soon. If you want to be included,
and you should, then forward your survey directly to Dr. Stafne. His e-mail
address can be found on the last page of the attached newsletter. If only half
of the growers respond to the survey, then our industry will only appear to be
half as big as it really is.
We need everyone to take part so we can flex our collective muscle when we need
to.
There is a class scheduled for this month. Andrew Snyder informed me that
Redlands will be sponsoring a tax workshop. Info on the workshop can be found
below. As always, it should be very informative.
Oklahoma Tax Commission Workshop
Redlands Community College will host a workshop presented by the Oklahoma Tax
Commission. Topics will include the Oklahoma Winemakers Monthly Report of
Spirits and Wines as well as other business related regulations concerning the
wine industry. The workshop will be held Friday, October 27 at 1:00 p.m.
at Redlands main campus located at 1300 S. Country Club, El Reno , OK . Please
RSVP to Andrew Snyder at snydera@redlandscc.edu

OGGWMA Education Committee Chairperson
Grape growers and winemakers,
Our industry has come a long way in the past 5 or 6 years. One area where this
is clearly evident is in the educational opportunities that have been
developing. The most exciting development, in case you haven't heard, is the
establishment of two Viticulture and Enology programs in the state. Both OSU-OKC
and Redlands Community College are creating associates degrees and will be
offering a selection of vineyard and winemaking courses over the next few
semesters.
Both colleges will be offering viticulture courses starting this fall semester.
Redlands is hard at work turning the historic building at their Darlington
vineyard into a classroom facility and state of the art winery. OSU-OKC will
soon begin remodeling and enlarging their horticulture center and plan to
establish a state of the art educational wine making facility there as well.
Below are two releases from these two fine institutions of higher learning:
OSU-OKC:
OSU-OKC, in cooperation with OSU Stillwater, will be offering the first class of
their Viticulture and Enology program beginning this fall semester. Future
plans include new facilities and a complete remodel of the Horticultural Center
at the OKC campus and the continued development of research at the vineyards
located at the OSU Fruit Research Station at Perkins and the newly established
vineyard on the OSU-OKC campus. Winemaking research and courses will also be
offered at the Food and Agricultural Products Center on the OSU campus in
Stillwater.
Fall 2006 class:
HRT 2053 Vineyard Selection & Harvest Management; 3 credit hours, fall offering
Provides information about the viticulture history, geographic location where
grapes are grown and climatic conditions necessary for viticulture production.
Also provides information about cultivar and variety selection. Field oriented

harvest management including equipment, processing and handling.

REDLANDS:
Redlands Community College offers Oklahoma's only two-year degrees in
viticulture and enology. The increased popularity of grape growing and wine
making in our state has provided economic development for many underserved
agricultural areas. Redlands Community College recently planted a 26-variety
research vineyard at Darlington and will soon complete a state-of-the-art
educational winery. These projects are funded through our Center of Excellence
Grant and an Economic Development Grant through the Oklahoma State Regents for
Higher Education. Classes are offered in traditional classroom and online
formats to accommodate student needs.
